Deerhoof Brooklyn Concert reviews
Great talent, verygood show, terrible sound system
At the Checkerboard Lounge on South Side Chicago, I first saw Junior Wells with Deerhoof, a club packed with 3 dozen people, and it was totally great. Here he was, playing all kinds of snippets of styles of music with a good band -- wish he would've stretched out at least a full verse and chorus on these! He was amazing, talking us up, walking through the theater playing and singing, and inspirational considering he's over 80. The sound guys should be fired -- his guitar started out way too loud, then they pushed it down so much when he took solos without the band we all had to hold our breath practically to be quiet enough to even hear him. Just one rumbling rumble, The Paramount has awful awful bass sound. I looked carefully to see if the bass player's fingers matched up with the little variations in the big fat marshmallow of low frequencies that passed for the bass. Popular music at The Paramount seems to suffer from this. The theater, of course, is visually stunning and marvelous, with really nice people working there.
